I have a confession to make today. There was a time where I was not as honest of a person as I needed to be in my life. This was over several years period. I learned a lot of lessons and damaged many relationships after I learned the power of honesty.
This bad habit of twisting the truth and being deceitful in my instance cost me several opportunities for happiness, ruined two marriages, cost me my career, and forced me to rediscover my true self. You may ask me Terry, you appear to be so open and honest today; Why were you dishonest during that period of your life?
The answer is: I did not have enough self-esteem to stand-up to my friends, family, and colleagues to state the truth and face the consequences. I was a person who always sought to be liked by others. Sometime after I graduated high school I lost my self-esteem along the path of life. I lost my intimate relationship with God and wandered into the woods of the lost.
It was not until my “Mid-life Crisis turned Disaster” that I realized the fact that I was living in a tangled web of mis-truths and some flat-out lies. It was during this six-year period that God showed me how my lack of putting Him first had cost me some of the greatest opportunities a person could be given. I decided back in January of 2013 to begin to work on my problem and face the music.
Today, I have continued to learn this lesson. I know it is very hard to be upfront and honest especially when you know the outcome is not the one you want to occur. However, I have learned that your true family and friends will truly accept and support you if you are honest with them in the first place. Furthermore, I have learned to realize that if your friends and family are not supportive of you for your honesty; it may be a good thing that you evaluate if that person is a true friend or family member. Sometimes it is a blessing to lose a friend or family member if they are not accepting of the truth.
My life today I strive to be as open and honest like an open book with everyone I meet in my life. I have re-gained my self-esteem and know my true supporters and family are those individuals that I need in my life.
My challenge to you today be tell the truth all the time and learn to face the results that occur from that action. You will be amazed at the results. It may feel like a failure at first, but you will find the silver lining of be true to your word and life!
