Small Changes Multiplied = Tremendous Progress

This quote is one that now in my life has had tremendous impact recently.  This is because since December of 2013, when I was diagnosed with diabetes, I have worked to get my daily blood sugars under control.

My blood sugars back then were averaging above 200 and my A1C was above 7.0. I sought a lot of advice from individuals who were diabetics such as my mother, my future father-in-law, and former associates in higher education.

This diagnosis at the time it was made was just another challenge in my mid-life challenge turned disaster.    I put it my health on the back burner as I handled everything else I was dealing with at that time.  I began a pharmaceutical and increasing physical exercise regimen.   However, it was not a true focus.

I tried many different things to begin to change my eating habits which were not as bad as my beverage choices.   It was easy for me to eliminate or lower the amount of intake of many sweets such candy, cakes, and such.   However, when it came to my beverage choices it was very difficult.  There was a period of my life when it would not be unheard of me consuming more than 10 cans of Mt. Dew or Coke a day.  This habit continued from college until my late 30’s.

I began a process over the past year to increase the water intake and sugar intake of the beverages that I was drinking.  I considered myself successful getting my blood sugars down to an average of 140 and my A1C to 5.8. However, my next visit to the doctor saw my A1C balloon up to 6.8 but my blood sugars averaged at 145.

It was 3 weeks ago I decided to take a massive leap and try something new.  I have never been a real fan of diet sodas, but I decided to try Sprite Zero.  I found it to be very tasty to my palate.  I started to only drink 1 or 2 a day along with crystal light lemonade and just water.

I have found a combination that has been very successful at making a massive change in my blood sugars while also helping me lose weight.   Since I have switched my beverage choices I have averaged blood sugars over the past 3 weeks between 95 and 105.    I also have found more energy and less needs for naps.  This past weekend I took a drink of Mt. Dew and I did not want another drink of it.  I had to say it was like drinking syrup.

Next week I visit my physician for my 3-month check-up.  I am curious to see what my lab results will show.  However, I can truthfully say a small change can make massive impact and results.
