8Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. 9They are a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck.
– Proverbs 1:8-9
When I was a young boy my mother used to say to me, “Son one day you are going to regret not listening to me; I hope it is not after I have died.” I used to blow that statement off every time she said it. This past week during my morning prayer and devotional the above statements really convicted and struck a chord with me. The reason the above verses convicted me was because if I would have heeded my mother’s advice when I was younger and in college my life would have been much different.
I not only had forsaken my mother’s wisdom, but I also forsaken God and his teachings that I spoke and lived as a witness throughout my high school years. However, when I left for college and moved out on my own I thought I knew it all. Guess what? I did not know it all and I paid the price for shunning the wisdom my mother and my Lord and Savior.
The price I paid for not heeding her warnings about my finances and my relationships with my two former wives. I also realized that by abandoning my Lord and Saviors wisdom for the wisdom of the World cost me 25 years of heartache and stress. If I would have been wise and listened to my mother and relied on my faith I may have avoided 2 bankruptcies and 2 divorces.
However, it was through those two experiences that I learned my lessons the hard way. I also would not have been able to realize my mistakes of shunning my mother’s wisdom. I thank God that he put me through those experiences and blessed me with grace to allow me to find a very special woman to marry and help me grow daily. I also thank God for allowing me to show my mother though I ignored her for nearly 20 years that I learned my lesson prior to her death.
It is the lessons that I learned through these events that help me truly understand not only the above verses but the importance of being a witness for others to see your faith. This is why I attempt to ensure that individuals who I coach going through “Midlife Challenges” understand and appreciate the importance of family and faith in their addressing remodeling their lives.
