To Know and Not Do is Not to Know

By: Terry Burgess, America’s Mid-life Coach for Men with Upward MC

This title of this blog is an axiom I heard recently at a seminar hosted by Mr. Ricky Bennett, CEO and Founder of The Richway Life Enrichment Program.  These nine words when I heard them the first time really pierced my heart with conviction when I thought about their meaning.

When I first heard these words, I immediately thought, “If you know something but you do not practice it or believe it then you truly do not know it but just acknowledge it.” However, the more I began to dissect and break down this axiom I found myself being guilty of realizing there are many things in my life that I share and teach to others to help their life that I do not totally follow myself.

This does not mean I do not believe the all principles contained within them. I simply realized that I do not fully engage in practicing the entire sequence of steps of the activities and principles.  This failure on my part not only means that I do not get the full benefit of the activity or principle, it also means I am limiting my own personal growth and success. Furthermore, it means that I do not fully know their power and how they can be empowering for myself and for my coaching clients.  This meant that I truly did not comprehend nor understood the full meaning and power these activities play in the function of helping my clients in facing their challenges.

The next day on my ride home to Kentucky I thought about this axiom continuously.  I found myself pondering what steps I needed to take so that I did not shortchange myself nor my clients.  I began to develop a plan to fully review and ensure that the activities I suggest for my clients are ones which if I have used in my own life are ones that I have fully used and know the details within them and the power they can bring only when they are fully implemented.

So, my question for you is this: Are there any principles, activities, or bits of knowledge that you think you know but you do not utilize them to the fullest potential in your life?  If so I challenge you to go back and fully implement them.  You may be amazed at the exponential success results that you will find once you do as well as the increased understanding of them.
